The Arts

Performing Arts

Performing Arts continues to rapidly develop, steadily increasing its profile and status at Kitebrook. This is manifest in the enhanced scope of opportunities both within Performing Arts lessons and in the growing range of extra-curricular options available to all pupils within the school. This includes: Drama, Dance and Stagecraft, the Drama Pathway for potential scholars as well as the option of taking solo or group LAMDA lessons leading to additional external examinations. In addition, our new Performing Arts curriculum ensures that all pupils are exposed to content above and beyond the expectation for their age group in readiness for Drama studies at the pupils’ chosen senior school. This encompasses the preparatory study of specific GCSE techniques, theoretical topics and the exploration of leading theatre practitioners, methods and styles.
Performing Arts is highly respected at the school and is recognised for the extraordinary impact it can have on pupils’ lives. This is achieved through participation in group, pair and individual activities, which, while developing confidence and the skills to perform in front of an audience, also impacts positively on their ability to communicate as an effective public speaker; a valuable skill in all walks of life. The department continues to enhance and strengthen its close connections to specialist schools by offering trips and outreach programmes, opening up the opportunities for our pupils in the secondary schools.

Music

The Music Department delivers a busy extra-curricular programme including the school orchestra and two choirs. There are peripatetic lessons on all orchestral instruments as well as singing, piano and classical guitar. In addition there are a range of highlights during the musical year including the Harvest Festival, Carol Service, Remembrance Service and music’s special place at the end of year Prize Giving ceremony. Furthermore, pupils are encouraged to participate in the wide ranging opportunities to attend concerts and other musical events outside school. Pupils from Kitebrook regularly achieve Music scholarships and awards to senior schools as well as taking part in music and musical theatre opportunities beyond the regular school curriculum.

Art

Art at Kitebrook continues to provide an exciting opportunity for pupils to explore a fascinating range of artistic challenges in our purpose built studio and surrounded by a perfect aesthetic setting. We aim to enrich the work of every child through the use of our bespoke and individual sketchbook scheme. Participation in our after school art extension club provides a further opportunity for all enthusiastic, gifted and talented artists.

Within the Art curriculum pupils study a wide range of interesting contemporary and historical artists and we encourage pupils to attend relevant exhibitions, some of which are organised as part of the school curriculum. From the Lewis Chessmen, the Bayeux Tapestry, Paul Nash and the war artists through to contemporary artists such as Althea McNish and Kehinde Wiley —there is always something new and stimulating to discover in Art.
